A Cup of Argument

One day, I had a huge argument with my friend @sabacoffe about marriage law. (Not that we were arguing like husband and wife! 😄) It happened at his café while he was roasting beans. The debate grew louder and more heated, until we both realised our voices were raised, and so were our tempers.

Even as we argued, my eyes kept drifting to the roasting machine. Behind the glass, the beans were tumbling in the drum, slowly darkening. I feared they might over-roast, causing him a loss in both coffee and sales.
By the time we reached the end of our debate, something shifted. We found one point of agreement. And then, almost symbolically, he served me a calm, steady drip of his coffee—cooling the fire of our words.

The Lesson from Coffee Beans

Whether as friends, partners, or colleagues, disagreements are almost unavoidable. At first, they can be healthy, like a spark of passion. But sometimes, they grow into anger.

The coffee beans reminded me of this truth. Green beans start raw, plain, even a little harsh. But with heat—carefully roasted—they transform into something fragrant, complex, and deeply enjoyable.

So it is with us. Arguments don’t have to end in separation or hatred. With patience and balance, the heat can bring out our deeper character—our strengths and our weaknesses. And when strength is shared, it can make our relationships richer and more meaningful.

Sometimes, all it takes is finding that one point of agreement, choosing to preserve the good, and being willing—like the one watching over the beans—to keep an eye on the heat.
